What does Hinenuitepo do?

Being the Goddess of death and the ruler of the underworld Hinenuitepo lives in the underworld waiting for the souls of the mortal ones in the real world to arrive. When she went into the darkness Hinenuitepo took the imortal side of life with her. In some versions of this myth it is said that Maui tried to follow Hinenuiepo and take the immortal powers back but the laugh of a fantail woke her.

Who is Hine-nui-te-po?

Hinenuitepo was first known as Hinetitama(Dawn Maiden). Her parents were Tane-Mahuta(God of Forests and Birds) and Hineahuone (the Woman created from earth). Tane-Mahuta then married Hinetitama. One day Hinetitama asked Tane-Mahuta if he knew who her father was(she didn't know him because he changed his form),he then told her that he was her father. When hinetitama found this out she was so overwhelmed by the shame, so she then fled to the underworld and became Hinenuitepo(the Goddess of Death).
